Lockets and the Heart

Lockets first became popular during the Victorian era and were meant to be worn next to the heart of its owner, either via a long chain or clipped to the front of one’s dress with a pin. They were often given as condolences to those who had lost a loved one. In times of war, soldiers left a lock of their hair for their sweethearts which was placed into a locket upon news of their death.

I find old lockets to be fascinating. When you open the locket, many times you will find a photograph of someone’s love. I’m always curious to know the story behind the photographs. Sometimes there will be a man dressed in a sailor’s uniform, sometimes a baby, sometimes an older person, sometimes a first love. It’s easy to see that the locket was a very special piece of jewelry to its owner, incredibly personal and a wonderful gift to receive.
