Cameos have been around since the ancient times. They were first created in ancient Egypt in the 6th century B.C., with the Greeks, Romans, Persians, French and English quickly following in the same path.

A cameo is a small scene or portrait carved in relief used for personal adornment. The Italian word, cameo, means "to engrave". Antique and vintage cameos were hand carved from stone, shell, coral, gemstones and lava. Many cameos nowadays are machine made, incorporating lucite or plastic. I personally prefer the hand carved variety.

Queen Victoria loved cameos and they became very popular during her reign. They were worn on black velvet ribbons or used as brooches.

And now they're back - used as rings, pendants, earrings, brooches, popped on your clutch, in your hat or scarf, worn as a tiara (as Princess Victoria of Sweden did when she was married), used as buttons, bracelets, the list goes on and on. How would you wear a cameo? Let me know your thoughts.
